Honest To God

In a world where everyone seems to be hiding behind something, vulnerability is at a premium. Everybody looks and sounds better on Facebook; you've noticed that too I'm sure. It's easy to get lost in the hype and plastic of it all. It's easy to fall into the trap ourselves. Sadly, many of us live with a superficial relationship with God. We experience ankle deep encounters and not much else. We know something's not quite right, but we can't put our finger on it. And, it's not really our fault. Superficiality is the sweet spot of our culture. Why would we expect anything different with God? Today, we'll uncover the role vulnerability places in knowing God…and ourselves.

Grace, when properly understood, is startling. It opens our eyes and allows us to see a view of acceptance and love that was previously unseen. This is the love of God. And this is the love that a blind beggar came face-to-face with when He met Jesus. Bartimaeus came to understand something that not only gave him sight in a moment, but gave him vision for a lifetime.

Today we'll look at a passage that has shaped the church for centuries and whose message is fresh in every generation. Are you ready?

At LifePoint, one of our core values is relationships. We are convinced life is better lived together than alone. As a matter of fact, relationships are a requirement on the journey of following Jesus. Just as a car needs gas to run, God made us to need connection and belonging to Himself and to others. Relationships are essential in influencing people to find and follow Jesus. As we pop the hood this week, we'll take a look at our Group Life Ministry.

There's a benefit to being a follower of Jesus that on the surface seems pretty modest and frankly, not that exciting. But when we look a little closer we see it's not just near to the heart of God, it strikes at the center of it. And the canvas of your life will be filled with vibrant colors or dull grays depending on how fully you participate in this incredible benefit.

As we open the pages of the New Testament, one of the first characters we encounter is a man named Matthew. In a moment, he follows Jesus and never looks back. Although on the surface it may seem that his life and yours are worlds apart, the closer you look the more you'll discover he's a lot like you. Whether you have been following Jesus for a long time, you have just started, or you find yourself standing at the threshold contemplating the journey, today we'll unearth a key to following Jesus fully.

God meets people in strange and surprising places. Many times, those places aren't of our own choosing. For instance, sitting in the seat of suffering and hardship is not a place where most normal people would choose to sit. But, what if it's one of the most meaningful seats in life?

It's easy to lose sight of the fact that God's heart is larger and more generous than we could ever dream. He is richer in mercy and filled with more grace than we might have thought. His heart throughout the Old and New Testaments is the same, it's never changed. Through the example of the nation of Israel we'll discover what's on God's heart and learn to avoid the mistake that Israel made; because a church whose mission is knit with His heartbeat can change the world.

We often reason that in order to experience daring faith we must have the right pedigree, a thorough knowledge of Scripture, and a long track record of godliness. We assume living audaciously for God is the exception, not the rule. Really? Today we’ll challenge the assumption that big faith is for the spiritually elite. As a matter of fact, there is good reason for every follower of Jesus to become bold, daring and risky with their faith.
